Why I Bring CBD Balm to Every Massage Appointment
I started bringing our CBD Lavender Balm to my massage appointments a while back and I have not gone without it since. Here is what I do, why I do it, and why the combination of targeted CBD application and massage works better than either one alone.
I get regular massages. Between training, working, and the general wear of staying active past 50, my lower back, shoulders, and traps have a way of accumulating tension that builds up faster than it clears on its own. Massage helps. But at some point I started thinking about how to get more out of each session — and that is when I started bringing our CBD Lavender Balm with me to every appointment.
The idea is simple. Before I lay down on the table I apply the balm directly to the areas that are giving me the most trouble that day. Sometimes I do it myself in the few minutes before the session starts. Sometimes I ask the massage therapist to apply it to those specific areas before they use their regular oil. Either way the result is the same — targeted CBD application exactly where I need it, followed by the mechanical work of the massage over the top of it.
My therapists always comment on the scent. The lavender essential oil in the formula is genuinely pleasant and it creates a calm, grounding atmosphere that sets the right tone for the whole session. That part is a bonus. The recovery benefits are the reason I do it.
Why CBD Balm and Massage Work Well Together
CBD applied topically to sore, tight muscles helps ease the ache and supports the kind of physical comfort that makes massage more productive. It is not doing the same job as the massage. It is doing a complementary job that the massage builds on.
When you apply a topical CBD balm to a specific area and then have a therapist work over that area with manual pressure, the mechanical action of the massage helps drive the active ingredients deeper into the tissue than surface application alone achieves. The pressure, the warmth, and the increased circulation created by the massage all contribute to deeper penetration of the balm into the muscle and connective tissue underneath.
The result is that the CBD is working at the site that needs it most, at a depth that topical application on its own does not fully reach, throughout the entire session. That combination of targeted chemistry and mechanical work is genuinely more effective than either one separately.
How Massage Enhances Topical Absorption
Massage increases local circulation and elevates skin temperature in the areas being worked. Both of these factors enhance the absorption and penetration of topically applied compounds into the tissue beneath. Applying a CBD balm before massage and then having a therapist work directly over that area means the active ingredients are being carried deeper by the mechanical action of the session itself. The massage is essentially doing part of the delivery work for you.
Why I Use the CBD Lavender Balm Specifically
There are a few specific things about the CBD Lavender Balm that make it particularly well suited for this use case compared to other topicals.
5000mg of Broad-Spectrum CBD Targeted Exactly Where You Need It
At 5000mg per jar this is a high-potency topical. Applying it directly to a specific area like my lower back or shoulders before the massage means that concentration is working exactly where I need it rather than being distributed broadly. I am not putting a little on my hands and hoping some of it reaches the right place. I am applying it directly to the area that is tight and sore and asking the massage to help take it deeper.
The Beeswax Base Stays in the Tissue Longer
Most topicals absorb quickly and are largely gone within minutes. The beeswax base in this formula creates a slow-release effect that keeps the active ingredients present in the tissue for an extended period. Applied before a massage this means the CBD is still working throughout the session and for hours afterward rather than being fully absorbed before the therapist has finished with the area.
The Lavender Sets the Right Tone
Lavender essential oil is one of the most well-documented botanicals for supporting a calm, relaxed state. Walking into a massage with lavender already present on your skin starts the wind-down before the session has even begun. My therapists always notice the scent and appreciate it. It creates a calm, grounding atmosphere for the whole session that supports everything the massage is trying to accomplish.
CBD eases the ache in the areas that need it most. The massage helps take it deeper. Together they do something neither one accomplishes as effectively on its own.
Exactly What I Do at the Appointment
I keep a jar of CBD Lavender Balm in my bag and bring it to every appointment. When I arrive I have two options depending on how the session is set up.
Option 1 — I Apply It Myself
Before I lay down on the table I apply the balm directly to the areas I want focused on that day. Lower back. Shoulders. Traps. I work it in briefly with my fingertips and then get on the table. By the time the therapist begins the session the balm has started absorbing and the CBD is already at the site that needs the most work.
Option 2 — I Ask the Therapist to Apply It
Sometimes I hand the jar to my therapist and ask them to apply it to the specific areas before they use their regular oil. Most therapists are happy to do this and appreciate being directed to where I need the most work. This option is particularly useful for areas like the lower back that are harder to reach yourself.
Either way the outcome is the same. Targeted CBD application directly on the tissue that needs it, followed immediately by the mechanical work of the massage over the top of it. The balm's beeswax base is not greasy and does not interfere with the massage oil the therapist uses afterward. It absorbs cleanly and sits in the tissue where you put it.
This Works With Foam Rolling and Massage Guns Too
You do not need access to professional massage to use this approach. The same principle applies to foam rolling, massage guns, and self-massage at home. Apply the CBD Lavender Balm to the target area first, give it a few minutes to begin absorbing, then work over the top of it with whatever tool you are using. The mechanical pressure helps drive the compounds deeper into the tissue in exactly the same way a therapist's hands do.
If you train regularly and you use a foam roller or massage gun as part of your recovery routine, adding the balm before that work is a simple upgrade that costs almost no extra time and makes the mechanical work more effective.
The Bottom Line
Bringing CBD balm to your massage appointment is one of the simplest ways to get more out of a session you are already paying for. Apply it to the areas that need the most work before the therapist begins and let the massage do what massage does best — with the added benefit of targeted CBD working in the tissue throughout the whole session.
The CBD eases the ache. The massage helps take it deeper. The lavender makes the whole experience better. That is a combination worth keeping in your bag.
Train hard. Recover harder. Age well.
